Repeatable Successes

When you're starting out on something new — whether it's a new project or a new career — the road ahead can be daunting and anxiety-provoking.

But chances are, if someone checked in with you a few months later when you were in the swing of things, you'd be just fine.

So why are we anxious the very next time a similar challenge comes up? I think, to some degree, it's because we don't document the steps we took to succeed — and so we're always starting from scratch.

My coach made a valuable suggestion to me to me — which I'd like to pass on to you — to take the time to document the lessons you learn every day.

Not only will you benefit from this — but you will be effectively creating a training manual for your next employee or subcontractor.

For example, as you'll read in this e-newsletter, I've documented the best questions to ask when writing a case study.

But I wish I had written this a few weeks ago, when I was starting a new case study. At that time, I found myself rifling through my files looking for the questions I asked the last time I had written a case study in 2006.

Now, that I've documented the questions in this e-newsletter, I only need to go back to my website archives to retrieve them.

The same goes for the bigger challenges. For example, I'm transitioning my business to focus more on direct mail and email fundraising for nonprofits. Rather than begin from ground zero, I can look back at what I did to become known in my current field of B2B and B2C copywriting — such as writing an online column, attending and speaking at conferences, developing a network of contacts, showcasing samples on my website, and publishing this e-newsletter. These are all repeatable steps that I can take on my new path.

While it can be tough to find time to add yet another "assignment" to your already overloaded schedule, you might find that writing down your everyday success stories actually gives you a lift — by reminding you just how good you are at what you do and how well you've always managed to meet each challenge life throws your way.
